Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Statutory Review Committee 2020

 

The Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act, 2015, requires that a comprehensive review of the provisions and operation of the Act be undertaken every five years. On July 27, 2020, pursuant to s. 117 of the Act, the Minister of Justice and Public Safety appointed the Honourable David B. Orsborn as a Committee of one to conduct the review now required. The Committee’s final report is due on or before March 31, 2021.  (Subsequently amended  to on or before June 30, 2021)

The purpose of the Act is set out in s. 3:

3. (1) The purpose of this Act is to facilitate democracy through
(a) ensuring that citizens have the information required to participate meaningfully in the democratic process;
(b) increasing transparency in government and public bodies so that elected officials, officers and employees of public bodies remain accountable; and
(c) protecting the privacy of individuals with respect to personal information about themselves held and used by public bodies.

In accordance with its Terms of Reference, the Committee will examine the operation of the Act and, as appropriate, make recommendations intended to ensure that the objective of the Act is realized.

The Committee will provide full opportunity for participation by the public and interested parties including written submissions, thoughtful comment and public hearings, either in person or virtual. All comments and submissions received will be made available on the Committee’s website and all hearings will be public.

Minister Parsons Announces Statutory Review of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act
